Authorities say Rivera stabbed a 36-year-old construction worker, identified by police as Angel Lata Landi, of Peekskill, in Chelsea just before 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Landi was standing in front of his work site when Rivera attacked him, NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said at a briefing Monday.
Two hours later, police said Rivera stabbed a 67-year-old man as he was fishing along the East River in Kips Bay.
Both Landi and the 67-year-old, identified by police as Chang Wang, of Chinatown, were pronounced dead at Bellevue Hospital, the NYPD said.
A half hour after the second attack, police say Rivera stabbed 36-year-old Wilma Augustin in Midtown East. She ultimately died of her injuries at Weill Cornell Medical Center, according to police.
A witness told police he saw Rivera standing close to Augustin before the attack, then heard her yelling for help as Rivera ran from the scene, according to the criminal complaint. A passerby also witnessed the first attack in Chelsea, the complaint said.
Rivera was arrested in Midtown East soon after the third incident, police said. His clothes were covered in blood, according to the NYPD. Investigators recovered two bloody kitchen knives at the scene, the NYPD said.
When Rivera spoke with police after the attacks, he admitted to stabbing all three victims, according to the complaint.
Police said Rivera had eight prior arrests on charges including grand larceny, burglary, assault and petit larceny.
