A Bronx man who admitted to trafficking fentanyl out of a daycare in the Bronx was sentenced to 45 years in prison Wednesday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York.

Felix Herrera-Garcia, 35, pleaded guilty in June to conspiracy to distribute narcotics resulting in death and possession with intent to distribute narcotics resulting in death after a 22-month-old boy died from poisoning due to fentanyl exposure in September 2023.

Three other children at the Divino Niño Daycare Center, where the drugs were kept underneath floorboards and in secret compartments, were hospitalized at the time.

Herrera-Garcia and his associates maintained more than 11 kilograms of fentanyl and heroin throughout the daycare, including where the children played, ate and slept, according to Damian Williams, U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York.

Williams said the operation ran from “at least in or about October 2022 through September 2023.”

“This case demonstrates the deadly reach and scope of the fentanyl epidemic, and the tragic collateral damage it inflicts on American lives,” Williams said in a news release.
