A dead humpback whale was found on the shore of Rockaway Beach Friday evening, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and NYPD said.
The whale, which is between 25 and 30 feet long, was found near Beach Ninth Street in Queens, police said.
The carcass was secured by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society is currently conducting a necropsy on the whale, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
During the necropsy, which is an autopsy for animals, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will attempt to find out any factors that may have contributed to the whale's death.
