More headaches are on the way for drivers who regularly use the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.
For the second weekend in a row, a section of the BQE will be reduced to one lane of traffic, the city Department of Transportation said.
The one-lane stretch on the Staten Island-bound BQE will run from Adams Street to Washington Street from 1 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 21 to 5 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 23.
The Sands Street entrance ramp to the Staten Island-bound roadway will also be closed during that time, the DOT said.
DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said the city is installing "weigh-in-motion" equipment along the route. The sensors will be synced with license plate cameras, and vehicles exceeding weight limits will be fined, he said.
The goal, Rodriguez said, is to discourage overweight trucks from putting additional wear and tear on the aging infrastructure.
“Weigh-in-motion technology has proven successful along the BQE in areas where it’s installed, leading to a 64% reduction in overweight vehicles along the triple cantilever,” Rodriguez said in a statement.
"These limited lane closures are necessary for us to continue to keep overweight trucks off the BQE and we advise drivers to take mass transit or seek alternate routes if possible," he added.
