There's a push to check the social media posts of gun applicants.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and State Senator Kevin Parker introduced the legislation, which would allow police to review three years of the social media posts, and one year of the internet search history, of any person who wants to buy a firearm.
Adams said this kind of legislation could help stop shootings fueled by hate.
"If this was in place, there would have been a clear indicator of the shooter in the Tree of Life shooting in Pittsburgh. The profile of a person who was mentally unstable of purchasing or possessing a firearm would have been flagged," he said.
Eleven Jews were killed last Saturday, the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in American history.
Police say all of the suspect's guns were bought legally.
