A popular Coney Island restaurant has decided to cancel a planned fundraiser for the National Rifle Association, NY1 learned Thursday evening.
Several local officials on Monday had called on Gargiulo's Restaurant to cancel the April fundraiser, particularly in the wake of the mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida high school on Valentine's Day that killed 17 people.
In a letter, a lawyer for the family who owns the restaurant announced the cancellation:
"As a long-standing member of the Coney Island community since 1907, the Russo family of Gargiulos Restaurant has provided a venue for thousands of community events and family celebrations. They have never had a national political issue land on their doorstep. They thank everyone for their interest in this important dialogue and have decided it best to cancel the event," the legal counsel wrote in the letter that NY1 obtained.
Local officials had slammed the fundraiser as an affront to the community's work to address gun violence in the neighborhood.
In a raffle and auction at the event, participants would have had a chance to win, in part, a handgun and a rifle.
The restaurant's owner had previously said it is an odd situation to be in, and the NRA has had events there before.
