A popular and colorful annual tradition stemming from Hong Kong returns to Queens.

This weekend marks the 29th Annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. More than 200 teams raced long boats, while keeping to the beat of their boat’s drummer. There was also music, food and performances. It’s all to celebrate Chinese culture.

David Xiong is a competitor who explains the significance of the festival, saying “it brings unity, like the entire borough I think knows about this and possibly all five boroughs. I think it just represents Asian culture and puts us on the map.”

Trophies will be given out to first, second, and third place winners. The event runs until 5pm on Sunday.
