NEW YORK - Bronx residents continue their crusade to stop plans to build a brand new, multi story jail in Mott Haven.

"We have been fighting this since day one and we will continue to do so until there is no fight left," said Maria Ortiz a resident of the neighborhood.

Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to close Rikers Island and open smaller community based jails in every borough but Staten Island. But in the Bronx, residents say the location chosen sits in the middle of a residential neighborhood and is too far from the borough's courthouse.

"We have enough issues and problems of our own we don't need the city to bring us anymore. That is the wrong place for it. Build it next to the court house where it belongs," added Ortiz.

The jail would be built on what is currently an NYPD tow pound. Residents say the site was picked without any community involvement.

"No one who made the decision for us in the Bronx to put the of the new jail at the tow pound comes or lives in the borough of the Bronx," added Bronx Borough President Rubén Díaz Jr.

The city stands by it's chosen location. A spokesperson for the mayor said, “We’re working with local residents every day to create a jail system that shortens the distance between detainees and the family and support networks that are so crucial to their eventual re-entry into the community."

But lifelong residents of the neighborhood like Walter Nash say they will not give up.

"I am going to die on Concord Avenue, but there won't be no jail there because I am going to fight that tooth and nail," Nash said.

The proposed plan for all community based jails will be submitted this week to the City Planning Commission for certification, kick starting the long review process for approval.

Residents say they hope their voices will be heard loud enough to stop it.
