The candidates are incumbent Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and challenger Khari Edwards, who has been in public service for 27 years.

For years, the city has been trying to fix the crumbling triple-cantilever section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway. The latest plan by the Department of Transportation would stack traffic lanes directly on top of each other and make the roadway 20% wider.

Edwards believes the city should follow a plan that was given to then-Mayor Bill de Blasio to rehab the expressway piece by piece.

“I feel that the original plan, by taking bit by bit, repairing bit by bit, to make sure that the structure is safe, that we maintain a very commerce corridor is the plan that was first introduced to Bill de Blasio that was set aside,” he said. “So as borough president, the advocacy is to work with the community, have that conversation, but also talk to those who are most impacted.”

Reynoso, meanwhile, feels that the city needs to “slow down a bit” and just maintain the expressway.

“The problem we have is that we have an administration that, I think, has a substandard level of understanding of transportation policy,” he said. “I say that we maintain it. We keep it in a way that is safe for everyone, and we allow for a future administration, where we have more progressive policies on transportation.”

During the lightning round portion of the debate, the candidates were asked who they are ranking first in the crowded mayoral race.

Edwards said he feels "the most comfortable” with City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams. Reynoso said “Brad Lander, Zohran Mamdani, Adrienne Adams, Zellnor Myrie and then Jessica Ramos or Michael Blake,” adding that he is not voting for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
