Nandida Pathardikar, who is visiting from Syracuse, said is very vigilant and aware of her surrounding while riding the subway.

“Whenever I am on the train,” Pathardikar said. “I try to find spots where I am not close to the door. I’ve also seen videos online where they snatch things and they go outside, so I try to be more on the inside where more people are.”

Taylor is facing multiple charges, including arson, reckless endangerment and several counts of assault.

“Things can happen, but things can happen anywhere,” Thomas Morlion, visiting from Belgium, said. “It’s an easy way to get around, so you have to deal with the unsafe parts, if they happen as well.”

While Morlion hasn’t felt unsafe riding the subway, some New Yorkers said they make sure to be high alert to avoid danger.

“I just try to mind my business,” Steve Barre of the West Village said.
