An outdated library is getting the modern makeover residents in the community have been calling for.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz announced she has secured more than $8 million in funding for upgrades to the South Hollis Library.

$3 million is coming from her 2017 fiscal budget. The balance will come from her 2018 budget.

Some of the renovations to the library will include new children's, teen and adult areas, more computers and a new program room.

"There's a real outcry for something to be done at this library. It's either do it now or spend several years putting small amounts of money in. And so we decided to just go for it," said Katz.

"It will allow the library to expand, become even more modern, which serves the needs of the community, so we're really excited about that," said Queens Library President Dennis Walcott.

Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and is estimated to be completed by 2022.
