It is the fifth day of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

Under the agreement, Israeli troops have pulled back to the edges of Gaza and the first round of hostages has been released. Many Palestinians are returning to what remains of their homes with humanitarian aid flowing in.

As Palestinians begin rebuilding, a new book out next week explores how Jewish texts and history have been used to justify the war inside Gaza. “Being Jewish After the Destruction of Gaza: A Reckoning” published by Knopf will hit the shelves next Tuesday.

The book makes the case that Israeli Jews have the right to equality but not supremacy.

Peter Beinart, a professor at the Newmark School of Journalism at the City University of New York, joined NY1 political anchor Errol Louis on “Inside City Hall” Thursday to discuss the book.

He’s also an editor-at-large of the progressive magazine “Jewish Currents.”
