Even a rainy day can't keep Amir Shokry from perfecting his sport.
"Pole vault is just so much studying. It's like studying the game, there's no moment where you're at your peak, you know what I mean? So you really just want to keep getting better every day," said the Susan E. Wagner High School senior.
Shokry fell into pole vaulting his sophomore year. He originally joined the track and field team to become a stronger basketball player.
"I thought it was just going to be a conditioning thing for when I joined the basketball team again next year. But I really fell in love with the pole vaulting. The pole vault coach, he brought me over and I did my first couple of heights and I was like, ‘I really love this and I think I could really be good at it.’ And after that, it was just like an everyday thing," said Shokry.
Very quickly, Shokry began collecting some hardware, earning first place in both pole vault and high jump at championship meets across the city.
"Amir is a great kid. I'm so thankful to have had him here at Susan Wagner High School as a senior. He has really, really blossomed between not only his work on the track, he's one of our great pole vaulters and helped us earn a city championship," said the school’s principal, David Cugini.
Shokry's dedication extends into the classroom. The honors student is part of the Scholars Academy at Wagner, taking several advanced placement courses, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
One of his favorite classes is journalism.
"I joined the journalism class because I love writing, so I'm the editor of the newspaper here. So I edit that and I write articles for it. And it's really become a passion of mine. I never knew it to be honest, but it's really like, I love editing, I love writing, I love speaking in my mind," said Shokry.
In addition to writing for "The Falcon Journal," Shokry is the president of the podcast and media club. Alongside a fellow teammate, they host their own podcast talking about sports, classes and preparing for college.
From balancing his schoolwork, his practice schedule and his many extracurriculars, Shokry said he feels ready for what's next. He plans to study architecture in college and hopes to one day build and design houses.
