Super heroes and villains took over Staten Island Saturday for the Borough's first ever comic convention.
It's A Pop Culture Convention that embraces all things comic books, video games, toys and characters.
"It's less expensive than Comicon, it's a bit smaller but still really cool,” said one student.
For years Comic con fans had to travel to Manhattan or beyond, until a student at New Dorp High School got the idea to throw their very own version.
"I was daydreaming in Math 2nd period freshman year, so I ran to Mr Orlando one of my teachers here and told him my idea, now we have a Comic con at New Dorp High School," said Megan Fisher.
It was a huge hit with hundreds of fans and characters who came out in full costume.
Even Captain Jack Sparrow sailed in for the occasion, "Oh yes I have my ship docked right outside, right out front."
The history buffs brought things back to medieval times with live action role playing.
"We're doing heavy lift combat wearing full metal suits and shields," said one larper.
Dozens of hours were put into these creations. This transformer was made from recycled materials and took eight months to build.
"It's handpicked from the trash, 13 cans of spray paint head-to-toe," the costumed transformer said.
Teachers at New Dorp High School say they have more than 30 sports teams so there's always a chance for athletes to shine.
But they hope the comic con gives other students a chance to show off their creative talents, like gaming, and embrace their inner nerd.
"More and more people are willing to say, yes, I'm a nerd!" Fisher said.
Organizers hope this event will inspire students, not just to stare at a screen and play games, but to build careers creating comics and video games of their own.
