Residents in a Shore Acres Neighborhood say they've been in the dark for nearly a year because a street light has yet to be fixed. NY1's Natalie Duddridge filed the following report.

Using flashlights to guide themselves along Hilldale Court, off Narrows Road South, has become the norm for some Shore Acres residents.

Residents say they've been waiting for the street's only light to be repaired for some time.

"We have had this streetlamp that has been out for about a year now. It gets very dark on this block, as you can see," said resident Linda Dimond.

David Sokolinsky has resorted to using the light from his cellphone to look for his dog when he takes him out at night.

"That's the worst. I can't see anything ever. Whenever I walk out, I start tripping over my foot," Sokolinsky said.

Neighbors say their community is filled with children, people and cars, and that the lack of light is a safety issue.

“Anybody could be in here. You can't see what you're walking into. Cars have been broken into before. You want to know who's around the corner," said Shore Acres resident Beth Malone.

Residents say they have been calling 311, the borough president's office and City Council members but are still waiting on a fix.

Dimond said the last she spoke to 311, she was told that they did have a claim on file about the issue.

"The other offices have said they'll get back to us. We're sort of on a line to get fixed," Dimond said.

"No one claims responsibility. Whether it's Con Ed or the contractor to fix the light, we can't get any answers. It's dangerous," Malone said.

NY1 has reached out to the Department of Transportaton for comment but has yet to hear back.
