A new greenway on the site of the Fresh Kills landfill is giving Staten Islanders more space to enjoy the great outdoors.
The 3.3 mile greenway features spots where residents can soak up the sights and sounds of nature.
But the main attraction is the bike path.
The new path connects bikes from an on-road path to an off-road area, where cyclists can pedal around away from the traffic.
"I see people smiling as they're riding their bikes, they're riding their bikes, you see couples riding their bikes, families, little kids riding their bikes on a nice safe bike path, right near Richmond Avenue, but very safe and secure on the bike path," said John Luisi of the city Parks Department.
The new greenway has not formally opened to the public yet.
A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held next month.
