Researchers hope a new study around the waters of Queens gives a clearer picture of Long Island Sound.
The Interstate Environmental Commission and the non-profit Save the Sound began studying water quality in the sound last month. Unlike previous studies, this one focuses specifically on water in the sound's bays and harbors, areas where the public comes into contact with the water.
Organizers say studies like this are important because water quality in the inlets can be very different from conditions in open water.
“This study will help us avoid some of those fish kills and get around some of the toxic algal blooms by identifying bays and harbors that are in need of work and in need of remediation or nitrogen reduction,” said Peter Linderoth, Save the Sound’s Water Quality Program Manager.
The study is expected to wrap up in October. Findings should be out sometime this winter.
