Construction is officially underway for Corona's newest affordable residential building for seniors.
Elected officials joined the Hellenic American Neighborhood Action Committee or HANAC to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Corona Senior Residence.
The 68-unit building for low-income seniors is going up on 101st street near Lewis Avenue.
The space will be energy efficient and will also have a pre-school on the first floor.
"We're billing this the new 'cradle to cane' project," said John Napolitano with the committee. "And we really hope the two populations synergically are able to work well together."
"I'm very excited to be able to do this for all the seniors in New York City because this is an H.P.D. program, so everyone will have access. But there will be priority housing for those that live here in the district," said City Councilmember Julissa Ferreras-Copeland, who represents the area.
Construction is expected to be complete by Spring of 2018.
