A food pantry, run by a non-profit, which helps women released from jail is in need of donations.
The Hour Children Food Pantry in Long Island City only has about two weeks of inventory left.
The organization first began collecting food to help previously incarcerated women feed their children upon release, but then saw a greater need for a food pantry in the community and expanded their outreach.
The food pantry is open 3 days a week.
They are requesting donations including juice, cereal and other non-perishable goods like canned foods.
"We basically need to somehow fund our food pantry and continue to provide food for our community. The need is very great in the summer. Kids are out of school and they don't necessarily have access to the free summer meals available, so we do see a lot more families coming and visiting us in the summertime," said Alyssa Adkins, the food pantry coordinator at Hour Children.
