Residents in Jamaica can now get free legal advice thanks to some volunteers.
Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman announced the opening of the "Legal Hand" Center on Friday.
The center, located within Jamaica’s Community Mediation Services building provides free legal information, assistance and referrals to residents.
Volunteers who will work there are not lawyers but will be trained to assist those looking for help.
"At Legal Hand, we want people to feel empowered and that they can come in and get the legal resources and information that they need," said Legal Hand’s Director, Ignacio Jaureguilorda.
Organizers say the center will also make legal help accessible to a broader range of people.
"Rather than having a distance between the consumer who needs legal services and the courts, we're bringing this kind of assistance directly to the community," said New York Court of Appeals Chief Judge Jonathan Lippman.
The first "Legal Hand" center opened in Crown Heights, Brooklyn back in November.
That location has already helped more than 75 people.
The centers are privately funded.
