Residents in Astoria will soon have a new place for their furry friends to play.
Elected officials have announced $1 million is going toward construction of the neighborhood's first official dog run. The new park will be located on Hoyt Avenue between 23rd and 24th Streets. It will replace one of the basketball courts located underneath the Robert F. Kennedy Bridge.
The project was one of the winners of the Participatory Budgeting ballot in City Council Member Costa Constantinides’s district, where residents got to vote on how to spend a portion of the district's budget.
“The community spoke that this was the location they wanted,” Constantinides said. “For a long time our dog owners have been looking for a place to socialize their dogs, to have an opportunity to run around, for other dog owners to socialize with one another, to really have an official Astoria Dog Run, and I think this is going to be a special location.”
The project is currently in the design phase. There is no word on when it might be complete.
