Local leaders take to the steps of City Hall to call for more funding for women’s health programs in Queens.
City Councilmember Elizabeth Crowley and members of the Women’s Health Initiative say four million dollars in women’s healthcare funding has been cut from the budget for the next fiscal year. The services include family planning, pre-and-post natal resources and early cancer screening.
Crowley says the funding is necessary so low-income, medically underserved, ethnically and linguistically marginalized women can receive treatment they need.
"So often this money is serving the most undeserved communities of the city of New York to allow them to go without care is simply unacceptable,” Crowley said.
In a statement, a City Hall spokesperson said, "There will be funding for these vital screenings. We expect this to be resolved at budget adoption."
