Anti-gun violence group SNUG responded to a weekend shooting in Poughkeepsie with a demonstration Thursday.
A coordinator for SNUG says the non-fatal Sunday morning shooting was just a few blocks from their event.
The coordinator, Danny Hairston, says it's their fourth shooting response, but notes a drop in shootings since 2016. He says they address violence from a health services perspective, treating it like a disease.
"Bring in individuals from the community that come in to interrupt violence, and then we take those individuals who would be at high risk for gun violence and do case management with them, and then we also address the community to let them know how violence spreads as a disease, and how, as a community, we can stop it," Hairston said.
Hairston says SNUG's funding comes through the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
