The sister of Aisha Mohammed, 18, and Zainab Mohammed, 17, spoke about the kind of people they were.
“My sisters [were] loving, my sisters [were] caring,” Mariam Mohammed said at the service in Mount Hope.
According to police, they responded to a call around 8 p.m. Friday when the sisters went swimming win the waters off Coney Island, Brooklyn, and drowned.
They were pronounced dead later that night, officials said.
Those at the funeral were emotional, but tried to remain strong to support one another.
“I’m gonna tell you guys: right now, they’re looking at us and they don’t wanna see nobody crying. So for [the] sake of Allah, instead of everybody crying more, I just want you to make do for my sisters,” Mohammed said.
Lifeguards were already off-duty when the teens went swimming.
Mayor Eric Adams attended the funeral and later addressed the drownings at his weekly briefing with reporters.
He spoke about how to prevent tragedies like these in the future. The mayor said there are currently 800 lifeguards hired for this season, with more coming.
Adams also highlighted the importance of water safety.
“Educate parents and loved ones on when it’s the time to be in the water,” Adams said.
However, that guidance can’t take away the pain of two young lives lost too soon.
“I want to tell my parents it’s going to be OK. They have me, my brother, and all of you guys,” Mohammed said.
People at the funeral said faith is their foundation during this challenging time.
