Advocacy Group Report Says NYPD Isn't Doing Enough to Crack Down on Drivers Violating City's Vision Zero Policy

A new report finds the NYPD isn’t doing enough to crack down on drivers violating the city’s Vision Zero policy.

The report from the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives says the number of pedestrian and cyclist injuries throughout the five boroughs increased more than 10 percent compared to the same time period last year.

While pedestrian deaths decreased slightly, cyclists deaths increased from four last year to nine this year through the end of May. Five of those involved hit-and-run drivers.

The group says the NYPD needs to add more resources to dangerous streets and intersections and consistently enforce bike lane violations.

In response, the NYPD says it's committed to ensuring the safety of all pedestrians and cyclists in the city.

They say compared to 2013, summonses for speeding increased over 55 percent and those for failing to yield increased more than 200 percent.
