The Sanitation Department will begin cracking down on its mandated composting program starting Tuesday.

Residents must separate food waste from the trash, or risk a fine. This includes food scraps, coffee filters, pizza boxes, and other food-soiled paper.

Fines start at $25 for buildings with 1 to 8 units, and 100 dollars for larger buildings.

The city gave out thousands of brown bins last year at the beginning of the program. Scraps can also be disposed of at drop-off sites across the city. The goal of composting is to cut back on waste.

However, the program has also raised some skepticism among business and property owners about the cost it ends up having on landlords and superintendents.

Kenny Burgos, CEO of the New York Apartment Association, and Chef George Duran joined “The Rush Hour” on Tuesday to discuss how their operations are affected by mandated composting.
