The Mets, like many other teams, had no answer for Madison Bumgarner in the postseason.
Bumgarner pitched a complete-game shutout, and Conor Gillaspie's three-run home run in the top of the ninth was the difference in a 3-0 San Francisco Giants win over the Mets in the NL Wild Card game.
The loss ends the Mets' season. The Giants move on to play the Chicago Cubs in the National League Division Series.
The Mets' Noah Syndergaard matched Bumgarner by pitching seven scoreless innings. Syndergaard did not allow a hit until the sixth inning. He gave up two hits in his seven innings of work, walked three and struck out 10.
Mets reliever Addison Reed worked out of trouble after loading the bases in the eighth. But Familia allowed a leadoff double to Brandon Crawford in the top of the ninth. He later walked Joe Panik with one out before Gillaspie's home run broke the scoreless tie and put San Francisco up for good.
The Mets only got four hits off Bumgarner. Their best chance may have come in the bottom of the fifth, when TJ Rivera led off with a double, but Bumgarner was able to strike out Syndergaard with two on and two out to end the threat.
Bumgarner has now pitched 23 straight scoreless innings in winner-take-all playoff games. He pitched a complete-game shutout in the 2014 NL Wild Card game against Pittsburgh, and then held the Kansas City Royals scoreless over the last five innings of Game 7 of the 2014 World Series to earn a save.
