Fire officials say they’re frustrated after a lithium-ion battery sparked a large fire Tuesday morning at a commercial building in Manhattan, injuring a firefighter.

According to the FDNY, from January 2023 to August 2024, officials visited the e-bike shop in the Garment District eight times and issued numerous criminal summonses and violation orders.

“What they’ve done here endangered everybody, not just the public, but our firefighters as well,” Chief Fire Marshall Dan Flynn said. “We’ve written them violations. We’ve written them summonses. They’ve persisted to engage in these unsafe practices.”

“If you see a location that you feel is dangerous, please let us know and we promise we’ll be out there within 24 hours to inspect it,” Flynn added.

Employees at neighboring businesses said they were shocked to walk into work and see fire crews blocking off the street.

“My salon smells really bad. I had to cancel my clients in the morning. We didn’t have power for a few hours,” business owner Laiz Casherande said.

“Luckily, it didn’t really affect our business. But it did go into the basement, and everything got a little smokey this morning, a little bit of chaos,” nearby employee Jordan Wall said.

According to officials, one firefighter suffered minor injuries while trying to knock down the flames — the latest injury related to a lithium-ion battery fire.

So far this year, the FDNY said 94 people have been injured, five people have died and there have been 250 investigations.

“Obviously, one fire fatality is too many, but this time last year, we were at 18, so I think the message is getting out there,” Flynn said.

The FDNY said if there’s suspicious activity, people should lodge a complaint via 311 and the department will be out to inspect within 12 hours.

The city’s Buildings Department has issued a full vacate order of the 12-story office building.
