The confirmation hearing for U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik to become the next ambassador to the United Nations will take place next Tuesday, Jan. 21 with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The northern New York congresswoman will be questioned by senators the day after Donald Trump is inaugurated president and returns to the White House. Stefanik was nominated by Trump for the position days after his election in November.
If the committee advances her nomination, she will need the approval of a majority of the full Senate. She is not expected to have difficulty in either case.
If confirmed, Stefanik will resign the House seat she has held for the last decade, which will trigger a special election. Per state law, Gov. Kathy Hochul has to schedule a special election within 10 days from being notified of a vacancy, which then has to then take place within 80 days.
Stefanik currently represents the 21st Congressional District, which includes all of northern New York, parts of the Mohawk Valley and the outer Capital Region.
