New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed legislation Wednesday that extends red light camera programs across the state and establishes a new red light camera program in the Hudson Valley.

The areas where the program is extended include:

  • The city of White Plains
  • The city of Albany
  • Nassau County
  • The city of Mount Vernon
  • The city of New Rochelle

The town of Greenburgh is getting a completely new program while New York City’s program is seeing an extension until 2027 and increases the maximum number of intersections with a red light camera from 150 to 600.

“The safety of all New Yorkers is my top priority and we know that red light camera programs are effective in protecting New Yorkers from dangerous drivers,” Hochul said in a statement. “Today I am extending the authorization of programs across New York and establishing an additional program to maintain our progress on traffic safety, while creating new protections for school aged children on the road.”

The governor also signed a bill into law that will increase penalties for overtaking and passing a stopped school bus, increasing the fine for a third or subsequent violation within three years from $1,000 to $1,500.

Hochul also signed legislation that requires all passengers on charter buses over the age of 8 to use the seatbelts provided and expands the reckless driving statute to include parking lots.
