The latest New Yorkers of the Week are making an impact on people of all abilities by inspiring them to work through physical challenges and meet their fitness goals.

Michael Walker is building muscle and rebuilding his life.

In the summer of 2015, Michael fell off his motorcycle, narrowly escaping death.

"I was in pain. Like, it was probably the worst pain I ever had and the worst feeling I ever had," Walker says. "How am I going to get out of this? How am I going get back to work?"

Helping him get out of it is the program "Normal to Be Fit." It is a mantra bodybuilding champion Tina Chandler has shared privately for a decade as a personal trainer.

With the help of her husband and actor Carl Ducena, it's been reaching those living with disabilities for more than two years, all for free.

"At a moment's notice, anyone can become disabled," Chandler says. "They don't really have a lot of people around them telling them that they can. And that's something that I find to be very motivational."

One of the first people the duo helped was in Tina's hometown of Houston.

Wade Washington is living with cerebral palsy and scoliosis. Through Tina and Carl’s message of hope, Wade was able to fulfill his dream of participating in bodybuilding competitions.

"What you can do is not give up on life. Find a way, find something to do. Let's get up, let's get out," Ducena says. "We're going to get you in shape and we're going to motivate you and keep you motivated so that you can live your best life."

By making fitness the new normal, dozens of athletes from across the country have learned to push through perceived boundaries.

"When you feel better about yourself, you go about things differently. Everyday life is that much better and happier, and that's what you want," Walker says. "It's a feeling that carries on."

"What I would like people to get from this is to keep going, to be as strong as you can be. Listen to yourself, and don't deny what we have inside of us," Chandler says.

So, for lifting athletes from all walks of life, Tina Chandler and Carl Ducena are our New Yorkers of the Week.
