A slippery situation has some Brooklyn pedestrians pleading with the city to clean up it's mess. They turned to NY1 For You for help. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following report.
A snow covered, icy sidewalk has pedestrians in Flatbush neighborhood treading lightly.
“It's just built up, layer on layer of ice,” said Brooklyite Dynishal Gross.
“It's always like this, slippery, icy,” said Darold Haskins.
“I’ve slipped on it twice,” said Aidan Farhi.
It’s a serious safety hazard according to pedestrians and commuters who say cleaning the sidewalk on the Lincoln Road pedestrian bridge is the responsibility of the city.
“It's not a safe environment. If it was a private property owner the city would've fine them but it's the city itself and they do nothing,” said Gross.
The area sees a ton of foot traffic between the subway station, a school and Prospect Park. Throw in temporary construction and residents say it's a real mess.
As you can see the problem's been growing for awhile, if you take a look at this patch of ground there's about an inch of ice that's built up.
“Pedestrians are literally choosing to walk in the street and jay walk with buses and cars and construction to avoid the bridge,” said Gross.
“I think that they could put some salt or sand, at least sand to cover the ice,” said another resident.
After pedestrians contact NY1, we called The City Department of Transportation and they sent crews to the pedestrian bridge and removed the snow and ice and salted the sidewalk.
It’s a relief for pedestrians who are happy to no longer be on thin ice.
“I’m just thrilled that NY1 covered it. I mean honestly, you guys got a result we couldn’t get with all of our complaints. So thanks so much,” said Gross.
