NYPD Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey has abruptly resigned, the department confirmed Saturday morning.

In a statement, the NYPD said Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch accepted Maddrey's resignation Friday night.

According to a press release from the NYPD, Tisch appointed Chief of Patrol John Chell as interim Chief of Department, effective immediately.

Philip Rivera has also been named interim Chief of Patrol, according to the NYPD.

Maddrey's resignation comes after a report in the New York Post that an NYPD lieutenant accused Maddrey of demanding sexual favors from a subordinate in exchange for more overtime.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the NYPD says it "takes all allegations of sexual misconduct seriously, and will thoroughly investigate this matter."

The Manhattan District Attorney's office also announced Saturday it would be investigating the allegations.

"These are extremely serious and disturbing claims that allegedly occurred at N.Y.P.D. headquarters in Manhattan. We are investigating," a spokesperson with the office said in a statement.

This is not the first time Maddrey has been accused of misconduct. In 2016, a former officer unsuccessfully sued Maddrey for requesting sex in exchange for job perks.

NY1 reached out to Maddrey’s attorney for comment but not received a response.

Maddrey had also come under scrutiny from City Council for overtime pay for officers earlier this year.

“I want you to be assured, we do put our best efforts in to reduce overtime. Our biggest challenge in reducing overtime is the unforeseen, the unforeseen and unknown,” Maddrey said at an NYPD budget hearing.

The Council says overtime costs were hundreds of millions of dollars over budget in fiscal year 2024.

Maddrey's accuser, Lieutenant Quathisha Epps, reportedly made more than $200,000 in overtime last year. When she tried to leave Maddrey, her attorney Eric Sanders is quoted saying her pay was outed in retaliation.
