A fire in the Inwood section of Manhattan injured 13 people and one firefighter Tuesday morning, FDNY officials said.
Flames broke out around 8:24 a.m. at a six-story apartment complex at 570 W. 204 St. between Sherman and Post avenues, authorities said.
Four people were transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, and six more were taken to Columbia University Irving Medical Center, authorities said. The remainder of those injured were treated on the scene by first responders.
The conditions and identities of those injured by the fire were not immediately known.
Fire officials said the fire started on the first floor of the building.
Leonard Rzepnicki, a resident in the building who uses a wheelchair, told NY1 Tuesday morning that he heard a popping sound behind his nightstand. It appeared to be an old wire, he said, that was too hot to touch.
"It was hot, so I had to wrap my hand in something," Rzepnicki said. "And when I pulled it, I really heard a lot of popping. Then all of a sudden, I turn to the closet in the back and there were flames in there."
More than 100 firefighters responded to the fire, which was deemed under control just before 10 a.m.
Fire marshals said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
