Horticulturists Shelby Miller and Joseph Conlan from Friends of the High Line are transforming a tree stump into a natural planter, which can have a dual purpose.

"It provides a home for native pollinators, in addition to the plants that they are planting," Janelle Grace, communications manager for Friends of the High Line, said.

What You Need To Know

  • The Climate Science Fair on the High Line runs from Saturday, Sept. 21 through Monday, Sept. 23

  • It is presented by Emerson Collective

  • This is the second year the fair has visited the High Line

It's just one of the things visitors can learn about at the Climate Science Fair on the High Line, presented by the Emerson Collective.

There will be 30 tech companies on hand with their solutions for climate change.

Friends of the High Line is bringing Climate Week to New Yorkers on the former elevated rail line-turned-linear park, which celebrated its 15th birthday this year.

"New Yorkers can come, they could take a look at the companies, they could learn how to build an urban garden that thrives, they could also learn how to talk to whales and everything in between," said Alan Van Capelle, executive director of Friends of the High Line, which cares for and programs the unique West Side open space.

The High Line itself has experienced the consequences of climate change, including flooding from heavy rains and having to close due to air quality concerns from the Canadian Wildfire Smoke last year.

On the flip side, the High Line's plants and gardens can help fight the impacts of climate change.

"We cool the neighborhood down. We also have pollinators located all throughout the High Line, so we are also growing an ecosystem that Henry Hudson would've seen 400 years ago when he came to New York," Van Capelle said.

Folks from Friends of the High Line will be on hand on their home turf, to talk about what they do to keep the park's living things thriving.

"You can talk to the horticulturist in our booth about all of the native plants that we have, any questions that you have about gardening, and in addition, we also will have a workshop about making your own natural bug repellent," Grace said.
