Crowds cheered over a stunning view from Long Island City as Macy’s Fourth of July fireworks lit up the sky over the East River.

In ways, it was a lot like the Fourth of July celebrations of years past.

People began to pack Gantry Plaza State Park in the early afternoon Sunday, long before any fireworks. Some arrived with a four-legged family member in tow.

Well aware of the security measures and street closures usually implemented at large events in the city, many of those who came arrived on foot or used public transportation. We spotted members of the NYPD, state police and even FBI, all there to ensure the celebration went off without a hitch.

But what many park patrons seemed to appreciate most is that this Independence Day was much different than it was last year - even if people are still wearing masks.

In 2020, Macy's downsized the fireworks display and conducted fireworks shows unannounced in the week leading up to the 4th to discourage public viewing amid the pandemic.

This year, for the 45th anniversary of the celebration, Macy's wanted to make it one to remember - launching more than 65,000 shells and effects over a 25 minute period - incorporating its own way of celebrating the heroic spirit of the city and the nation.
