NEW YORK - A violent fight turned deadly at a homeless shelter in Manhattan over the weekend.

Officers received a call just before 2 a.m. Sunday for an assault at the Basics Housing Men's Homeless Shelter on West 83rd Street.

When they arrived, investigators found a 36-year-old man with a stab wound to his torso on the first floor, and 22-year-old Geronal Washington with multiple stab wounds on the third floor.

Both were taken to the hospital, where Washington was pronounced dead.

"It's quiet here. That's crazy. But thats how it is when different people keep coming in, it's going to change," said one shelter resident.

"Everyone is walking on egg shells. No one knows what happened really, we're tying to just figure out and make sense of everything, but the paranoia and anxiety is causing me to have a lot of unpleasant thoughts. Staying here is very, very hard to do," said another shelter resident.

The 36-year-old man is in stable condition and now in police custody with charges pending.

In a statement the Department of Homeless Services offered condolences and support to the family of the victim.
