This year's flu virus claims the lives of two young children here in the city.

An eight-year-old girl who was having trouble breathing died Monday morning at Elmhurst Hospital.

She had been diagnosed with the flu on Sunday.

Neighbors say the local school is full of sick kids.

"So scary and painful. So sad for her mom. I have a son one year younger than her and it's just so scary," said one mother.

Health officials say there has been another flu death, but would not reveal the age or where the child lived.

Police say the eight-year-old had a pre-existing health condition.

And it remains unclear whether she received a flu shot.

Doctors say getting the shot is the best way to keep the flu away.

So far this season, Queens is the hardest-hit borough with more than 4,000 lab-confirmed flu cases to date.

Experts say stay home if you’re feeling sick, wash your hands frequently and if you have a child that is sick get them checked out.
