There's a new show playing in the Theater District that's not considered Broadway. NY1's Frank DiLella takes you under the sea for National Geographic's "Encounter: Ocean Odyssey."

National Geographic took on the Theater District with a splash on Wednesday at the unveiling of "Encounter: Ocean Odyssey." Opening night guests for the event included Alec Baldwin and his wife Hilaria.

"I knew it was a matter of time before National Geographic would have you come in and see what they do best — which is to show you the natural world; not in a fish tank, not in a zoo, to show them, as my wife would say, at home in their own real element," Baldwin said.

The new immersive experience transports audiences underwater from the South Pacific to North America. "Encounter" took three years to complete.

"Now you can come in with the family, have a good time right here in the center of New York City, and learn about Ocean Conservation while experiencing the big creatures that live there," Nat Geo Partners CEO Declan Moore said.

In "Encounter," you'll get up close and personal with sharks, penguins, and even a 50 foot humpback whale.

"As chief science advisor, it started out really just kind of crafting the narratives — what information did we want to get across, what are the really the unique, untold stories of the sea," Nat Geo Chief Science Advisor David Gruber said. "Then working with the special effects and the sound people to really put this into an immersive experience."

A portion of the proceeds from "Encounter" will go towards ocean conservation, something opening night guests were applauding.

"I'm here to welcome our new Broadway neighbor," Broadway actor Jenn Colella said. "It's so cool that Nat Geo is offering a new experience in folks here in Times Square, and a little ocean awareness is always good."
