Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery held a robot building workshop on Saturday afternoon.

The kids learned to build their own machines, during the event which was held at the Center at Maple Grove.

The building is located adjacent to Maple Grove Cemetery in Kew Gardens.

Participants programmed their robots to travel, pick up objects and then return back to them.

Organizer Carl Ballenas said the event came about after realizing that some of the people buried in the cemetery have backgrounds in the sciences.

"We have an engineer, an aviation engineer who practically competed with the Wright brothers in 1903…We have the two tinkers and associates of Nikola Tesla and they're buried there," said Carl Ballenas, the President of Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery.

The Friends of Maple Grove Cemetery will hold an event for adults next month.

The gathering will include a 9/11 book reading.
