Citi Bike has opened a new flagship operations center in Brooklyn.
The new 16,000-square-foot facility is located on 14th Street between 2nd and 3rd avenues in Gowanus.
It houses 174 bike mechanics and station technicians who work to make sure the program's thousands of bicycles and hundreds of stations function properly.
Officials say the new center will help Citi Bike expand beyond its typical ridership.
"We have to think outside the box in identifying those New Yorkers who would like to experience biking, but can't afford it," said Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams. "Let's look at docking stations around public development. Let's look at schools where we have a high volume of homeless children who would never have a Citi Bike key if we don't encourage them to do so."
Citi Bike plans to boost its fleet with an additional 2,000 bikes and 150 stations by year's end.
