Advocates Tuesday called on the mayor and a Queens City Council member to fight the city's homelessness by sticking to a near decade-old plan to redevelop Willets Point.
Former Queens Lawmaker Hiram Monserrate and local leaders say the mayor and Councilwoman Julissa Ferraras-Copeland should follow through on the 2008 plan to build 5,500 new housing units in Willets Point. Of those new units, about 1,900 would be slated for affordable housing.
Monseratte and others said Tuesday that people are living in the streets because they can't pay city rents.
“In our community, we're being priced out,” said Monserrate. “People can't afford to live in the neighborhoods that they grew up in.”
“This is a no-no, okay? And it's a shame,” added Talea Wufka of the East Elmhurst Corona Democrats.
The redevelopment plan has long been delayed because of legal challenges.
NY1 reached out to representatives for Mayor de Blasio and Councilwoman Ferraras-Copeland, but we have not received comment.
