A gunman is dead after a shootout with police in Brooklyn on Thursday, according to the NYPD.
The shooting happened in East New York around 4:15 p.m., according to police.
NYPD Chief of Patrol Terry Monahan says three officers were in the vicinity of the Cypress Houses when a man ran out of a building.
After one of them followed the man to Logan Street, the suspect pulled out a revolver and fired at the officers, according to Monahan.
Police said the officers returned fire before the man fled behind a building located at 840 Belmont Ave.
One officer confronted the man, who was still armed, in the alley and fired at him once, killing the suspect, police said.
The NYPD said they recovered a .32-caliber revolver at the scene.
The suspect has not been identified yet.
Monahan said the officers, who were part of an anti-crime team, were at the Cypress Houses because there was a word of a potential retaliatory gang shooting for a shooting that happened over the weekend.
It is unclear if the suspect was connected to that shooting, police said.
