Even in sub-freezing temperatures you can still hang 10, or so says a surfing school in the Rockaways.

Despite the chilly water, surfers are still flocking to the beach to catch the waves at Rockaway Beach.

Instructors at the Locals Surf School say that winter is in fact a great time for newcomers to learn the ropes.

"With the quality wetsuits we have, it really is no big deal. It's kind of like snowboarding, you just gear up the right way and you'll be totally fine," said Locals Surf School Co-founder Michael Reinhardt.

"The best thing about winter surfing is you literally have the entire beach to yourself. In the summer time, you're kind of almost consolidated to smaller parts of the beach, but here you can surf anywhere along the coast," said Locals Surf School Co-founder Michael Kololyan.
