A radio broadcasting legend has died. Officials with WBLS radio confirm Vaughn Harper died Saturday Morning at a hospital in New Jersey.
Harper famously pioneered "The Quiet Storm" format for WBLS in the 1980s. His career spanned nearly a half century.
WBLS host Jeff Foxx says Harper was one of a kind. He remembers Harper's so-called 'velvet voice' that graced the airwaves as he played love songs in the late night hours.
"Nobody sounded like Vaughn. It was so rich, so smooth, so warm - it had its own distinct style. There was only one Vaughn Harper,” said Foxx. “In New York City. And everybody all over the - really, all over the world, they would come here, just to hear the Quiet Storm."
Harper suffered a number a health setbacks over the last several years. He was 71 years old.
