America's longest-running community music school can be found right here in the city, and it's celebrating 121 years at its annual Spring Gala this year.
At the Third Street Music School Settlement in the East Village, more than 5,000 students from preschool to age 93 get musical instruction.
Originally founded in 1894, the school says it strives to admit everyone regardless of financial background, and no matter what genre of music they wish to pursue.
"You can take an individual lesson, everything from oboe to ukelele. And in terms of ensembles you can take anything from orchestral to rock band," said Third Street Music School Settlement Executive Director Valerie Lewis.
"It's like being in a toy store. There's just all these instruments, drum sets, pianos everywhere, it's filled with music. It's really a great space," said Department Chair for Wind, Brass and Percussion at Third Street Music School Settlement Brandon Tesh.
NY1's own Pat Kiernan will serve as host for the school's Spring Gala on May 16.
Legendary bass player Sting is an honoree, and will also be in attendance.
