The New York City Police Department is investigating after a police officer shot a man in Manhattan early Tuesday morning.
Police say officers answered a call of an emotionally disturbed person at the Riis Houses near Avenue D and the FDR Drive in the East Village shortly after midnight.
When the officers got there, investigators say they found a 25-year-old man with a knife.
Police say the man ignored orders to drop the knife, and was shot by one officer when he advanced on the officers.
The man was hit once in the torso.
He was taken to the hospital and is expected to survive.
The officers were not hurt.
