Too many New Yorkers are waiting for an organ transplant, and one local hospital hopes to change that.

Jamaica Hospital partnered with LiveOnNY to host Organ Donor Enrollment Day Tuesday. It's all part of LiveOnNY’s state wide campaign to enroll as many New Yorkers as possible. Doctors and organizers were on site to register new donors and address any concerns.

They say New York State has the lowest level of registered donors in the entire country.

“It's extremely difficult for us to be so low - to be the lowest state in the country - because the problem is New Yorkers basically depend on organs from New Yorkers,” said Dr. Amy Freedman, LiveOnNY’s Medical Director.

“I'm a recipient of a heart transplant-- 8 years ago-- so I'm still alive and functioning and still working and healthy so I think it's very important, the gift of life,” added Dr. Anthony Dimaria of Jamaica Hospital.
