LaGuardia Airport is about to undergo a major facelift and when it's done, the facility will look far different than it does now.
The plan calls for the airport to be completely rebuilt.
Its current buildings will be torn down and replaced with a new terminal 600 feet closer to the Grand Central Parkway.
That shift is expected to give planes more space to taxi to their gates.
Nearly two miles of new taxiways are expected to be created.
The airport's current terminals would also be replaced with one unified hub.
Governor Andrew Cuomo made the official announcement Monday alongside Vice President Joe Biden, who once famously criticized LaGuardia as something you'd see in a third world country.
"LaGuardia is un-New York. This is a new phrase. You've heard the phrase un-American? Well, I'm starting a phrase. It is un-New York," Cuomo said. "LaGuardia is slow. It's dated. It is a terrible front-door entrance way."
"I don't think Governor, this would have ever come to fruition, had you not decided you're going to think big and think outside the box," Biden said.
The plan calls for a new AirTrain to LaGuardia.
It will link the terminals with a new parking garage that will be built further away.
The existing parking structure will be torn down.
The AirTrain will also connect to a ferry dock and to the Long Island Rail Road at Willets Point.
The first phase is expected to cost $4 billion and will be paid for by the Port Authority and private funding.
Phase one is expected to be completed by 2019.
