Friends and family on Friday marked three months since Akai Gurley's shooting death in the stairwell of a Brooklyn housing project.
About two dozen people gathered at the Pink Houses for a march.
The Pink Houses is where Gurley was killed by a police officer whose gun discharged as he entered the stairwell.
Gurley's domestic partner released white doves, while others released balloons and lit candles.
Speaking at a local church, family members said they appreciate the community's support.
Supporters said they want to make sure he is not forgotten.
"Akai Gurley is different. Akai Gurley's name is going to make changes for the system, for NYPD," said Hertencia Petersen, Gurley's aunt. "So whenever they going into any stairhall in any urban area, in any dangerous area that they think is dangerous, they are going to always stop and think,'Akai Gurley, Eric Garner.' They're going to think before whatever it is they have to do."
Last week, a grand jury indicted Officer Peter Liang on manslaughter charges in connection with Gurley's death.
